Grian stumbles into town with a bullet lodged in his spine and another in his ass. He walks with an obvious limp, making his spurs jingle obnoxiously with every step.
He doesn’t know where he is. His absolute idiot of a horse is at the bottom of a canyon choking on dirt. His back hurts, and his coat isn’t doing much to hide the blood oozing out of his bullet wounds.
All in all? Miserable day. Zero out of ten.
And, he thinks as a cloud passes over the scorching western sun above, it’s just going to get worse from here.
There are people staring. Townspeople, obviously, on both the street and inside whatever piles of wood they’re trying to pass off as actual buildings. And then there are the horses, as judgemental as Grian’s own rude, terrible horse.
And then there are the ghosts whispering to each other in the shadows. They point and laugh and mime shooting guns and stick their tongues out and flip him off as he walks by.
Grian grimaces at the attention and pulls his hat low over his face.
(That’s the thing about the living, they never know how to mind their own business!)
(Not that the dead are any better, mind.)
(And not that Grian is much better than them.)
He’s got a walking stick and a gun. The gun doesn’t have any bullets left in it, and the stick is half-broken. He used to have a knife, but he left it with BigB (because he’s stupid! Stupid, stupid, stupid!) His sword is at home, and his ax is somewhere in the desert buried in a skeleton’s ribcage.
It’s a small town, at least. Grian only walks past the saloon and the general store and the post office and two whole entire houses before he’s through the town and in front of the church.
More importantly, he’s in front of the graveyard.
He looks up at the tree in the middle of the graveyard. It’s got a noose hung on it, and there’s someone hanging from it: no soul, no breath, no life.
“Rip,” says Grian. (Living slang, he thinks.)
Looking around carefully, he hops the graveyard’s fence and heads towards the body.
“It’s nothing personal,” he tells it once he’s standing before (and below) it. “I’ve just got to borrow some of your juice, that’s all. You won’t be needing it where you’re going.”
Letting out a long, and deeply annoyed. breath, Grian leans his stick against the tree. He cracks his neck, shimmies a little in place, winces as the bullets in him wiggle around painfully.
“Right,” he says.
He nods.
And then he gets on his toes and places his hand on the body’s chest over where its heart once beat. He closes his eyes, and-
“What are you doing?” he hears- a whisper, hoarse like an asthmatic, well, horse.
The Living, Grian judgmentally thinks.
He wrinkles his nose in response. “Nothing. Go away.”
“Uh-huh. Well-”
The whisper cuts off as Grian shushes it. He’s busy!
No soul, no breath, no life… but there should still be, at least, juice. Tasty juice, perfect for getting rid of nasty bullet holes and dissolving the bullets inside.
But.
“This is a little personal, don’t you think?” the voice asks. “I mean, we don’t even know each other!”
Grian frowns.
And then Grian screams as the body he’s touching starts freaking wiggling.
His eyes fly open (hah!) and he stumbles backwards, clutching his hand to his chest and breathing entirely too heavily for a creature unable to feel fear.
The body smiles. It waves. It laughs as Grian hyperventilates below it.
“Why, hello there!” it cheerfully says.
Grian lunges for his stick and starts beating the corpse with it.
“Ow!” it yelps. “Hey! Ow! Stop that!”
“You’re supposed to be dead!” Grian snaps. (He’s rather an expert in these kinds of things.) “Go on! Be dead!”
The body whimpers and moans and kicks at Grian at Grian swings at it:
“Yeowch!”
“‘Yeowch’ this,” Grian huffs. He cracks his stick upside the body’s head so hard that his stick actually finally breaks in half.
The body just looks offended.
As Grian bends down to try and magic his stick back together, the body raises a hand to rub the side of its head.
“Okay, rude,” it angrily says. “What did I do?”
Grian narrows his eyes up at it: jagged scars cutting across its face, skin almost grey in appearance, rope around the neck. Fancy clothes like that of a businessman.
No soul. No breath. …Some life?
“You’re alive,” Grian explains. “That’s a problem.”
“Tell me about it,” the body sighs. It rolls its eyes towards the town. “Those guys spent weeks trying to get me killed! Haven’t the faintest idea why.”
This is. Strange.
“Where is your soul?” Grian demands. He stands and pokes the body right in the tummy, ignoring the light giggle it gives in response. “You’re supposed to be dead.”
“Ah, see, that’s a funny story, actually…”
Grian turns and starts to walk away with his broken stick. “Yeah, well, I don’t want to hear it. I haven’t got the time.”
A cloud passes over the sun.
“Hey!” the body calls. “What about my juice! You said you needed it!”
“I can’t get it from someone alive.”
“Oh, is that all? Cut me down, I can help.”
The bullet in Grian’s back is awful smug for something about to get dissolved. It digs in as Grian turns around and gives the body a capital-L look.
“Did you kill someone?” he flatly asks.
The body bats its eyelashes. “Well, you won’t find out unless you get me down from here.”
Grian… weighs his options. He can’t run like this. Death will find him by sundown if he can’t heal up and hide himself. But the corpse in front of him is an affront to nature and he kind of really hates it.
He sighs, anyway, and starts back towards the tree.
Twenty minutes later, he and his new corpse friend are standing in a cave over the lightly-decomposed body of a young man in a dirty white shirt.
“That’s a dead man,” Grian astutely says.
The body nods. “Yup. Found him myself a few days ago. Went and reported it to the townspeople, but they just hung me instead of thanking me.”
Grian looks at him with a confusedly-furrowed brow. “They didn’t even come and get the body?”
The body shrugs innocently; Grian is sure that it killed this man.
He crouches by the dead man, anyway, and puts his hand over its heart.
“You’re one of those reaper guys, right?” the standing body suddenly asks.
Grian chokes on his own breath. “Ah-”
“Oh, don’t mind me asking!”
“That is. Private information.”
“So you are! That’s good, ‘cause, see, I’ve got this problem…”
Slowly, the body settles on the ground next to Grian, criss-cross-applesauce. It puts its hands in its lap.
“I may have screwed with Death,” the body says.
Grian looks at it, a walking corpse. “Well, I’d say.”
“And now Death is after me,” it continues. “So, if you’re a reaper, maybe you can put in a good word for me? I’m not abusing my immortality or anything, honest!”
Grian sucks in a sympathetic breath through his teeth. “Yeah, sorry, bud, I can’t do that. Death’s after me, too.”
The body doesn’t so much as blink before grinning and saying, “Then that’s even better! We can team up! You know what they say, two heads are better than one!”
“Better not. I’ve got a big target on my back. If you want to be left alone, I am not the reaper you should be hanging out with.”
He’d be much better off with Mumbo, Grian thinks. Death likes Mumbo. They’re good friends even outside of work.
But the body just shakes his head. “No, man, you don’t get it.”
And then he reaches into his suit’s inside pocket and pulls out a gun. The gun: old, tarnished silver with skulls engraved in the metal.
It points Death’s Scythe at Grian with a tilt of the head.
“Cool, huh?” it asks. “Now, I know that you know what this is, so I’m sure that we won’t have any arguments here when I suggest that we start working together. Reapers avoid other reapers, right?”
Grian rolls his eyes. “Yeah, unless they’re explicitly looking for other reapers. Put that down, you can’t shoot it, anyway.”
He turns back to the dead man on the floor; he needs his juice.
He jumps as a bullet flies right past his ear and into the cave wall behind him.
He freezes.
“I’m Scar, by the way,” the body- Scar, and Grian has heard of him, his name has been on the reaping list for almost a century now- says. “I’ve got a wagon hidden in an old barn outside of town and some supplies.”
Slowly, Grian lets out a breath. Of course. Of course! He’s only been on Earth for a day, and he’s already being kidnapped by a Living. Great. He’s never going to live this down.
Through grit teeth, he says, “Grian. Now, excuse me…”
He closes his eyes, and he plunges his hand right through the dead man’s chest until he’s holding the heart. He squeezes it, and he pulls it out of the body, and he brings it to his lips. He opens his mouth, and-
———
Or: It’s the Wild West, and Grian is a grim reaper is running away from Death, Scar is a human who cheated Death and (mostly) got away with it, and is immortality really all it’s cut out to be?
I’ve never written anything with these characters before, so let me know what you think!!

Day Five: Sunburn - Heartstroke
Luke was always eager to prove himself; the runt of his group on Tatooine, the boy was only twelve as he ran to the best of his ability, competing with fourteen and fifteen year olds as they marched onwards into the Dune Sea. It was a proper adventure into the unknown, with actual stakes and a sense of danger, the kind his uncle explicitly forbid him from.
He knew they barely tolerated his presence, with his unchanged voice and short stature, reminding them of a childhood they so haughtily thought they’d outgrown. But they were the closest thing he had to friends, even if they mostly saw him as an irritating little brother. The youth was going to show that he could keep up with them – he wasn’t exactly a little kid either!
“Keep up, wormie!” one of the older boys shouted as Luke knelt by the edge of a canyon. He had to have been going twice their speed, but his little feet couldn’t close the gap. Sweat glistened from his brow, soaking into his sun-bleached long hair, which seemed to grow increasingly darker and more matted as he continued his trek. The boy swallowed what pathetic amount of saliva he could muster for his parched throat, scrambling back to his feet as he uselessly marched on.
“Don’t call me that,” Luke huskily whispered under his breath, following them as they continued east, past the edge of the canyon. Wormie. It stung every time he heard it, and it made him physically recoil with each syllable. They got a kick out of mocking little Luke, so sensitive and emotional, quick to impulsive flareups. It usually led to him doing something stupid and getting in trouble.
“I’m not listening!” the boy shouted back as he stumbled further. How good a glass of water would be right now – or even better, a warm glass of milk. But Luke couldn’t turn around, not yet. Rumor was that the skeleton of a Krayt dragon was just a bit further out, and Luke wanted to see it with his own eyes. If any one of them were a little bit older, they could have used a speeder..
The heat was beginning to overpower young Luke, his breath becoming more and more shallow. His footsteps began to become uneven, losing focus, unsteadied as he marched on. His vision blurred, the images of his peers doubling as he tried to blink back into normalcy, the youth didn’t notice the large rock that met his foot.
Luke flipped over, falling flat on his rear. To his great embarrassment, a roar of laughter cut through the winds of sand, funneling his way. Fighting back tears, Luke wiped his bubbling eyes and running nose.
“Cut it out,” yelled a voice ahead, deeper than the rest. Luke was too caught up in his own humiliation to look up at the figure that approached him, flinching as a comforting hand was on his shoulder. “You okay, Luke?”
It was Biggs – it was always Biggs, with his black hair and slight dusting of a moustache broaching his upper lip. He was older than the rest, fifteen, more assured. He rarely joined in to the mocking of Luke, and always seemed to have an active interest in his life. Unlike the other kids, Luke felt comfortable in calling him his friend, despite the age difference.
“Y-Yeah,” Luke said, as Biggs helped him up by hooking an arm under his shoulder.
“Go on ahead, guys, we’ll catch up!” Biggs shouted to the group, turning his attention back to his young friend. “I don’t know what it is with you; you’re still just a kid, Luke. You shouldn’t have followed us.”
“I’m not a kid! I—”
The older youth gave a dry look his way, causing Luke to let out a bashful smile.
“Here. Drink some water, you look like you’re about to pass out,” Biggs said, unclasping a vial from his belt and handing it to Luke. “Don’t go out this far without some next time.”
Luke took a drink from the vial, coughing just as he swallowed, nodding. “I promise,” wiping spare droplets off his lips, looking up with happy eyes. “And Biggs?”
“Yeah, Luke?”
“Thanks,” he said sheepishly, turning away with a thankful grin.

my mom recently read in a novel that some larger praying mantis species have been known to kill and eat hummingbirds. I know about bird-eating tarantulas, but I was curious if you knew of other insects who prey on birds, mammals, etc.? I know most will scavenge anything, but what abt critters who hunt? the idea of insects who hunt large prey is fascinating to me
large generalist predatory insects like mantises and katydids predominantly eat other insects, but the majority of the vertebrate prey they take is probably frogs and lizards, and typically ones smaller than themselves. hummingbirds might not be too representative of typical vertebrate prey because (I believe I heard a mantis researcher say) their metabolism is so tightly wound that the stress of being caught is enough to kill them, and all the mantis has to do is hang on, which they definitely can do. still, vertebrate predation is pretty impressive for orthopterans and mantodeans, since they’ve got to do it all without venom!
army ants of various types are also famous for their ability to catch vertebrates, but most army ants are actually specialists on other social insects (ants, wasps, termites), and the few generalist predator army ants still predominantly prey on invertebrates (and don’t skeletonize cows and horses like they do in cartoons).
diving beetles will hunt fish and aquatic amphibians—there’s a reason their larvae are called “water tigers!” belostomatid water bugs are probably the most impressive aquatic vertebrate-eaters though, and use powerful venom to subdue surprisingly large fish, tadpoles, and even other vertebrates:
outside of insects, there’s a lot of spiders that can feed on herptiles, either by overpowering them with strength like huntsmen and tarantulas, or by snaring them in webs like widows, the most successful snake eaters:
plus, there’s always the famous Nephila orbweavers whose sturdy webs can catch avian prey, but this is probably a fairly rare occurrence.
going over to centipedes, giant scolopendrids are quite successful predators of vertebrates, with any species large enough likely preying on herptiles, and occasionally on some far larger than they are!
Scolopendra venom is evolved to take down large prey, so it’s no surprise they’re some of the most prolific vertebrate-eaters in the arthropod world. some very large Scolopendra (gigantea, maybe galapagoensis, viridicornis, heros) will hunt bats, sometimes by hanging to catch them in flight. other predation on mammals and birds seems to occur opportunistically, especially where the prey is helpless: S. galapagoensis was recorded feeding on baby rodents in the Galapagos; other island species like Cormocephalus coynei will feed on seabird chicks (enough with the “fluffy” avian favoritism, Nature! ‘pedes gotta eat).
oh, speaking of nestling-devouring, there’s also some freaky observations of slugs munching on soft mushy songbird babies! someone on Twitter had their nest camera record some chicks getting eaten by a large Carabus ground beetle, but I can’t find it again.
but I think the most shocking example of vertebrate predation by an invertebrate is probably Epomis, another ground beetle. as larvae, they feed on frogs far larger than they are by letting themselves get attacked, latching onto the would-be predator, and munching on it until it perishes. adult beetles also prey on amphibians, but just run them down instead of luring prey.
youtube
(there’s also video of the adult beetles preying on frogs, but they seem to all be stolen by some weird content scraper YT channels, so I’ll not post them here.)
let me know if I missed any good examples of vertebrate predation by bugs!

I was wondering, since Rev has Six and the other prowlers he takes care of, what would he think of a Legend S/o who takes care of Prowlers, Spiders and Flyers for the games? Like they own some and they usually go to World’s Edge, Kings Canyon and Storm Point before they are in Rotation to check on the animals and they all really really like s/o when they drop by.
Okay I sort of took the vibes of this and absolutely ran with it. This is basically a plot point skeleton for a first book in a multi-book fanfiction at this point:
You never noticed Revenant between games before, as Bloodhound was always more your pace with a commonality in caring for beasts, until one day you were running behind.
The Flyers were upset that day, as were the Spiders. You ended up having to spend way more time to feed both, and you didn't even get a chance to get close to them in order to check their condition.
By the time you reached the Prowlers, you understood why.
Nothing quite like a 6'7" tall metal maniac holding a young, injured dinosaur like a beloved puppy to get you to pay attention.
He was not pleased to see you.
He was immediately accusatory: why weren't you there sooner? Something about how bad this could have been, and how he can't stand the use of prowlers as fodder for entertainment, and that they deserve care or to be let go.
Oddly enough, you agree with the oversized villain character of the Apex Games.
You interrupt him to ask what exactly is wrong, since it needs to be addressed immediately.
"Blood scale" is no sooner uttered than you jumping over the prowler in his arms to try to find the lethal bleed.
He shoves you away, and you hear him say it.
"I took care of it, skinbag."
He... he did?
He flicks a bloody, hollow scale in your direction. Most of the blood has drained, but it clearly was a blood scale.
You spent eight years in school to become a veterinarian with a focus on neozoology and exotic animals, became a specialist in some of the most dangerous fauna on this side of the Outlands, and pushed the present understanding of medical knowledge on these species youself just for some simulacrum at work to "take care of it" himself.
He reels back a bit as you stare at him, letting the prowler leap from his arms while panting happily, letting it's tongue loll out.
After that encounter, Revenant could not escape your notice, much to his annoyance for a few months.
You would seek him out to present questions about prowlers aloud near him, much like you would with Caustic for the spiders. Like Caustic, Revenant would often sigh loudly in frustration while answering the complex question like it was elementary knowledge.
He became an invaluable resource.
Caustic never came around to liking you, but Revenant got used to you.
Finally, Revenant would start "appearing" when you would make your usual rounds to the battlefields' prowler dens.
You are surprised to find that Revenant's presence does not upset the prowlers, but rather calms them down.
He started by just watching you take care of the prowlers: taking blood labs, treating small injuries, providing meat fortified with necessary vitamins and minerals, administering basic medicines to the sick, and tagging newborns for tracking.
Then you tried checking on a prowler with a broken leg, which would usually call for careful euthanasia due to how dangerous it can be if the prowler lashes out in pain.
You thought you could help, but trying to set the leg proved too painful.
The bite would have killed you instantly, if it reached you.
Revenant took the bite with his own body, holding the snout in place around his leg to give you time to set the break, splint it, and hard cast it.
He began stepping in to help you after that, and it became an unacknowledged standard for you to give the prowlers better and more in-depth care in exchange for his invulnerablility, knowledge, and strength.
It started to become the best part of your job.
You began getting to the prowlers first, and spending a bit longer with them.
Eventually, he started following you to take care of the flyers and spiders too, although he clearly was a bit more out of his depth in those situations.
He was able to adjust to the flyers fairly easily, but the spiders and him seem to have a respectful hatred of one another.
The spider eggs are no problem for him, and even freshly hatched spiders do not affect him much; but the massive, drop-ship sized adults are a different story.
Given their venom is caustic and turns his body to a rusting, oxidizing mess: fair enough. You agree with him, but moreso because of the fangs that are almost as tall and wide as you.
Thankfully, so long as they're well-fed and it's the daytime, they don't have much interest in you.
Revenant, however...
If the spiders become aware of Revenant, they will either threat pose at him until he backs away or gently approach him to reach for him.
He's not fond of the latter behavior, likely because he's not fond of having younger, smaller males trying to attach a spawning web to him.
It's funny, to watch his smaller frame hiding in a crevasse from a massive spider who has mistaken him for a possible mate.
Revenant rapidly became the prettiest (and most docile) bachelorette at the ball, likely on account of not killing and eating the males like the females normally would.
At the same time, he plays the hardest to get, leaving you snickering back at the dropship to handle paperwork.
He hates it, obviously, but he sticks around anyway.
Finally, one time a male managed to attach a ball of spawning silk to him, and that was the first time you got to help Revenant back.
Back at the facility, after a very uncomfortable and sticky ride back from Storm Point, you were able to carefully use acetone and a paint scraper to get the webbing off of him.
Revenant was about as cooperative as the prowlers, growling and complaining with each long scrape.
Some of his paint comes off with the webbing, but he doesn't seem to care so long as his evidence of being the target of a male spider's love and affection is gone.
You promise in the privacy of his living space that you won't tell anyone about it, and thank him for always being around to help you
He immediately shoots down your thanks verbally, insisting it means nothing to him
"As long as the prowlers are taken care of, I don't give a damn"
He mumbles about wishing they weren't a part of the Apex Games, right as you scrape off the last clump of webbing
He tries to get up to leave, but you stop him to wipe him down with acetone, just to be sure the adhesive slime isn't lingering.
He's sticky beyond compare, and the acetone-soaked rag strips off paint with the adhesive.
You have to carefully hit every crevasse to clean, which rapidly reveals he's...
Ticklish?
As the paint is stripped from the metal plating, Revenant contorts, jerks, huffs, and gasps randomly as you gently rub the rims and edges of his chassis.
He's clearly embarrassed and uncomfortable, causing you to instinctively apologize while insistently cleaning him.
He reminds you of most of your patients: large, able to kill you in a single motion, and yet vulnerable in some way.
And that's when you got fully attached to sticking close to him.
He invited you to sleep on his couch for the first time, especially as long as it took to finish cleaning him.
You insisted you "couldn't" because you needed to stay up until he was fully taken care of, which included repainting the stripped areas.
Honestly, you were completely exhausted and not all there at that point, but he let you help him repaint his chassis.
Between the paint fumes, sleep deprivation, and exhaustion, you passed out in his room.
After that night, Revenant wouldn't stop sticking to your side. You caught his attention, and you weren't getting away from him.

whether it's canon or your au, what do you think the agents, Sim troopers, and ai would dress up as for Halloween? I especially see Wash, Caboose, Tucker, Sarge, Theta, Omega, Gamma, York, South, and Connie being gung-ho about it.
Oo!! Ill do this for my au!!!
Blood Gulch
Carolina: The boys had to pay her just so they could put a cheap cat ear headband on her. She did allow Maine to do face paint afterward and vehemently defends it to anyone who might make fun of it.
Wyoming: A vampire. He puts way to much effort into it and ends up unable to wash off the face paint for a week.
Maine: Swamp Monster. Yes he has glowing eyes. Yes the Red Team collectively pissed themselves when they saw him from across the canyon.
Washington: A glow-in-the dark skeleton. Basic, but he insists he ALWAYS goes as a skeleton. (He admits it's because it was tradition that he and his sisters all matched on halloween, and that skeleton was broad enough to have fun with every year)
York: Werewolf, secretly stoked once he sees Carolina with cat ears. He has deluded himself into thinking they are in some sort of couples costume.
North: An angel. (Its bad quality like from party city)
South: A devil. (also party city quality)
Texas: The grim reaper. She has a really creepy skull mask covered in old (hopefully fake) blood, and delights herself by scaring her team.
CT: She's got regular clothes on save for a pumkin hoodie, citing how she wasn't allowed to celebrate Halloween as a kid and doesn't get the hype.
Freelancer
Church: Will not dress up, no matter how many times Tucker tries to get him in a couples costume. Halloween is for babies and he is way to cool for it.
Omega: On the other hand, Church's AI dresses up like Beetlejuice. (He really wants Church to be Lydia)
Tucker: A vampire, but sexy. He wanted Church to be a vampire hunter, but that didn't end well. He has those fake fangs in that give you a horrible lisp.
Caboose: Rudolph the red nosed reigndeer. Yes he knows its not Christmas, he just really likes that one stop motion film.
Sigma: He is dressed like a court jester. Point and laugh.
Sarge: Uncle Sam. He would've let off fireworks if Donut hadn't confiscated them instantly.
Gamma: Also, Uncle Sam. He makes fake fireworks :)
Simmons: Data from Star Trek. It's his favorite character! (He's just like me for real!)
Delta: He does not dress up. That is illogical. (Nah, he's Spock LMAO)
Grif: He wears black and calls it a day. He's just here for the candy tbh.
Theta: Headless Horseman! He replaced the horse with a big holographic dog, but Grif will punch anyone who tries to point out the inaccuracy.
Lopez: They covered him in cardboard and painted him like Optimus Prime
Donut: A fried egg.

— LAST LINE / MUSIC MONDAY (Tuesday)
tagged by @aceghosts @simplegenius042 @cassietrn @socially-awkward-skeleton @theelderhazelnut @voidika thank you beloveds! 💕
This song really hits the Valenya x Ianthe vibe before shit hits the fan. They spent a lot of time running off together for “hunting trips” when in reality they pitched a tent out in the middle of nowhere for a couple of days so they didn’t have to worry about getting caught. Ianthe always begged to go riding with Valenya on Mystrunner
The sun goes down, another dreamless night
You're right by my side
You wake me up, you say it's time to ride
In the dead of night
Strange canyon road, strange look in your eyes
You shut them as we fly, as we fly
And here’s the first little peek of what I’ve started to write for them!
When Valenya first took flight, she had gritted her teeth and used every ounce of willpower not to look down for fear that she would lose consciousness and slip right off of the saddle, plummeting to a death she would not even be present for. The Lady Ianthe had no such problem, her grip around Valenya’s waist loosened as she leaned this way and that to take in the vast landscape below them.

Dreamer in Teyvat -Night 1- (7/?)
[1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6] [For the next part check Masterlist]
[Equipment: Backpack, bag, shield, 3 Sango pearls, 3 Onigiri, comfortable Inazuman clothes for traveling]
Tumblr media
Thankfully you haven't woken up in your world yet, that means one day and night in Teyvat doesn’t equal one night in your world. But still, you can’t help but wonder how much time is left till you wake up.  Well you can just sit and think about it or do something… of course you choose to do something. Thankfully Miss Momoko let you sleep in her house for the night, she even prepared some Onigiri so you have something to eat later. She didn’t want your mora but you felt bad how much she did for you, so you left it in a place where she will be able to find it later. For today’s plan is to find Gorou and ask him to accompany you to Mouun Shrine. The first place to search for him was where other soldiers gather but you couldn’t spot him anywhere. You ask the first Samurai that you spot. -“Excuse me, do you know where I can find General Gorou?” The man looks surprised. -“General is now busy. If there is some problem I may help you.” -“Ah no, thank you! I just…um…a-anyway! Have a nice day!” and with that you run off.
It's really unlucky that Gorou is busy today. You’re not sure where he is and when he will have free time, so for now you decided to go to Mouun Shrine alone. You pass an old bridge and follow the road and pass another one.. You continue following the road till you reach the beach. You notice that for now you’ll walk on the sand, so you take off the sandals, holding them in hand. You pass through shallow water and then continue walking on sand.  You reach the small canyon, you take a look around it wondering if it's a good route to the Shrine.
Tumblr media
You decide to continue through it. The sand here felt much colder. When you pass it you notice something. Katanas and some destroyed things were lying around. It looks like someone was fighting there. You only hope whoever won is not here anymore. You take one of the best looking katana. At least now you have something to protect yourself with. Even if you don’t know how to use it you still can stab someone or something with it. From here you can see the skeleton of the whale but before it on the right side there is another bridge. Passing through another shallow water that changes into a waterfall, you reach the bridge. The wooden bridge seems to be in worse condition than the one close to the village. You put on your sandals and step on it, testing if this holds your weight. It seems stable enough so slowly you go through it. When you approach the end you notice that some planks must fall off. You had to jump. You take some steps back and then run and jump. Your feet slipped and you quickly grabbed the planks, knee hitting hard into the wood. You hissed in pain but you got up and left the bridge. You sat down on the ground to check your knee. -”At least it’s not bleeding..” you sighed. Deciding to take a small break, you start to eat the onigiri that Miss Momoko prepared for you. It’s delicious. You notice there are some Berries so you take them for later. After resting for a bit you continue to follow the path. After some time, you see 3 Torii Gates.
Tumblr media
Passing through them you see the ruins of the Shrine. Looking around you don’t see anything unusual. There are some loaches so you try to sneak on them and get some loach perls. After some time you managed to collect 5 loach perls, maybe you will be able to sell them later. Going around the shrine you search for anything. But then you hear something.
Tumblr media
There was Abyss Mage, it seems it was searching for something. It didn’t notice you yet. Should you try to attack it with a Katana? It doesn't have a shield yet, but what if the Abyss Mage noticed you before you'll struck it? Should you just hide and wait till it will go away? Or maybe should you run back towards the village?
------ Yes, I didn't forgot about this series. Tbh I had a bit more time and motivation so I wrote the next part! But I can't promise I'll be back of writing other parts immediately after the voting is over ;; Also sorry for mistakes, the worst is when even I notice silly ones after posting it but I can't correct them because you can't change post if you added voting T_T

Never been so disrespected in my life. I was chilling in my dirt house because I got stuck outside and an Enderman straight up stole my wall. He took my dirt and there were skeletons out there! They turned my ass into a pincushion and now all my shit is down in a canyon.

I posted this in a community I am in, but I also wanted to post it here for my own posterity.
I live in Idaho, and for the past week, I have been on a long road trip driving through Utah and SE Idaho going to various fossil sites, museums, dinosaur attractions, etc. The list of places I visited are:
Dinosaur National Monument - hot hot hot! But very worth it. It is perhaps the most well known location on this list, so I won't be too detailed here. Highly worth it, though!
Utah Field House of Natural History State Park Museum - a smaller museum, but they had an interesting focus on actual field work which is great if you are interested in spending time in an exhibit focused on the discovery and preservation of fossils as well as seeing skeleton and fossil exhibits. Good hands on exhibits for kids.
Hiking trails like the Mill Canyon Dinosaur Bone Trail and the Copper Creek Dinosaur Track trail - The sun! It is brutal! BRING LOTS OF WATER.
Museum of Ancient Life at Thanksgiving Point - This is one of the largest, if not the largest, displays of dinosaur skeletons in the country. It was interesting to see the positioning that they chose, and the skeletons were often posed in fully decorated scenes which was a fun change from the usual museum pedestal setups. The museum moves through the fossil record chronologically, so while dinosaurs are a large feature, they are not the only focus.) Excellent space for kids with lots of activities and hands on displays.
Natural History Museum of Utah (they had lokiceratops fossils and a skull cast on display, which was pretty cool to see. Their displays in general were wonderful. Their other displays were also wonderful, and they did a great job including hands on stuff for adults and kids alike.
George S Eccles Dinosaur Park in Ogden - I had a really fun day here, though the dinosaur statuary was often comically outdated—their T. rex was standing fully erect putting weight on his tail, which was nostalgic and funny. A lot of that statuary is dated because it is from when the park was founded, but they have made some attempts to update the statuary. Inside is a geology exhibit as well as a fossil exhibit, and their signs were informative and more accurate. Overall a very fun experience, though.
Did some driving around and hiking to view some outcroppings at the Wayan Formation, but this was just general site seeing for my own gratification and there isn't really access to much of the area.
Idaho Museum of Natural History at CSI in Pocatello - they had several oryctodromeus fossils as well as complete skeleton displays. This was of particular interest to me because they are unique burrowing dinosaurs found pretty exclusively to the area, and it is now our state dinosaur as of 2023. The museum is small, but I will say that all of the displays are very thoughtful, and they included a lot of birds, small mammals, and plants in their informative displays. The Hagerman Horse also featured, which is our state fossil, and they highlighted the unique fossil record of Idaho.
Hagerman Fossil Bed National Monument - This was my final stop of this particular trip, and I am glad that I went. There is no access to the fossil beds themselves, but there are some great trails with lots of informational placquards with views of the fossil bed area. The Thousand Springs Visitor center for the monument is one of my favorites that I have been to. The rangers were so excited, friendly, and informative. I asked to become a Jr. Ranger, and I did the book and got my badge and patch after being sworn in as a protector of fossils and advocate for conservation by a wonderful ranger who talked with me for a long time about all of the things they had on display as well as an endocast of a hagerman horse brain. The ranger got very excited about that and told me the thing he loved most about it was that the brain size to body mass ratio indicated that it would have been similar to that of modern day horses, so that it indicates that the hagerman horse had personalities, emotions, etc. just as modern horses do. I am already of the belief that this is largely true of all life on the planet, but how it was described really hit me and I got quite emotional about it! It was extra fun because I could see how excited it made the ranger—the expression of like "YES we have TRUE ENGAGEMENT." 😂 It is a small little place, but turned out to be a highlight of my trip.
Tumblr media
Anyway, sorry for the long-winded post! I took about 5 million pictures, and am working on organizing them all by location and animal. My goal is to go through, animal by animal, and read the current literature and compare it to the information and skeleton positioning at each of the museums. I will be sharing that progress here eventually. If anyone has any questions or recommendations for travel in the area, hmu!
